What are Grits?

How to make Cheese Grits
The first step is to boil the grits. After that, you bake them mixed with the cheese & the eggs. Just follow our step by step directions in the recipe card, and the photos below, and you will have perfect easy peasy cheesy grits!
- Bring your water to a boil, add the salt and the dry grits. Stir well and cook covered.

Stir In the Cheese
- Remove pan from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese and the butter.

Bake the Cheesy Cheddar Grits
- You will need to remove a small portion of the hot grits into a shallow bowl so that you can temper the beaten eggs.
- Return the tempered egg and grits mixture to the saucepan and mix in well. Pour out into a prepared baking dish. Bake until golden on the top. Remove and let sit 10 minutes to 'set up' before serving.

Frequently asked questions
White grits are made from bleached hominy, yellow grits are made from unbleached hominy.
You will not get the same texture. Grits are ground coarser. Cornmeal prepared in this manner is actually called Polenta.

Easy Peasy Cheesy Cheddar Grits
Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup yellow or white grits
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cup grated cheddar cheese
- ½ cup butter
- 2 egg
- ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees and Grease a 8" or 9" square baking dish.
- Stir grits into saucepan of rapidly boiling, salted water.
- Cook and stir until boiling again.
- Cover, reduce heat to low, and continue cooking for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir the grated cheese and the butter into the hot grits.
- Beat the eggs and gradually add 1 cup of the hot grits mixture to temper. Return tempered eggs to he saucepan of grits mixture, stirring well.
- Pour into the prepared baking dish and bake 30 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes to set up before serving.
