Filipino Dipping Sauce Recipe (Sawsawan)

While lumpia is delicious on its own, when served with this Sawsawan Filipino dipping sauce recipe, the flavor is simply next level. Some like their dipping sauce to be sweet and sour, while others prefer it to be more savory.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice or lime
  • ¼ black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sugar to taste
  • 2 red chilies slivered thin
  • 1 small tomato diced
  • ¼ cup red onion diced finely

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, vinegar, water, lemon (or lime) juice, black pepper, and sugar.

  • Add the red chile slices to taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. If you like your sauce to be sweeter, add more sugar. If you like it to be spicier, add more chilies.

  • Stir in the diced tomato and onion.

  • Serve immediately with lumpia.

Notes

  • Calamansi juice is usually used, but lime or lemon juice is a perfect substitute.
  • You can also add other ingredients to your dipping sauce, such as ginger, garlic cloves, or chopped green onions.
  • If you want your dipping sauce to be thinner, you can add more water.
  • The dipping sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
