Ingredients

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 oz chocolate chips dark or milk chocolate

Instructions

  • If using a Candy Melting pot, turn it on low and add the chocolate chips. Let it sit while preparing the peppermint patty candy dough. If using a microwave to melt the chocolate chips, wait until the candy dough circles are chilling in the freezer to melt the chocolate chips.
  • Prepare the baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside.

For the Peppermint Patty filling

  • Measure the powdered sugar into a large mixing bowl. Add the sweetened condensed milk, peppermint extract, and vanilla extract. Mix ingredients together to form a candy dough, mixing until malleable.
4 cups powdered sugar, ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk, 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Dust a clean surface, or a silicon pie dough mat with some powdered sugar. Turn the candy dough out and roll it out to ¼" thickness.
  • Using a 3" round cookie cutter, cut out circles and transfer to the parchment covered baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 10 minutes.

Preparing the Chocolate & Dipping

  • Check the Candy Melting pot, stirring the chocolate until smooth. If the chocolate is still too thick, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of coconut oil or shortening to thin the chocolate for easier dipping.
    24 oz chocolate chips
  • If using the microwave, heat in a microwave safe bowl for a 1 minute burst, then stir. Repeat on 15 second intervals, stirring each time, until melted, and smooth.
  • If the microwaved chocolate chips seem stiff, or too thick, use 1 - 2 teaspoons of coconut oil or shortening to thin the mixture out. Do not overheat, as this causes chocolate to stiffen or seize.
  • Take the chilled peppermint patty dough circles from the freezer. Place a candy circle on a candy dipping tool, or a fork.
  • Dip gently into the melted chocolate and lay back on the parchment lined pan. While the chocolate coating is still wet, add any sprinkles, if desired.
  • Repeat dipping until all circles are coated. Return to the freezer for another 10 minutes. Remove and enjoy!

Notes

  • A candy melting pot is worth the investment, as it keeps a low steady melting temperature, helping to keep the chocolate fluid.
  • If melting chocolate with the microwave, always use low heat (the defrost setting if you don't have heat levels). Too much heat causes chocolate to stiffen up and seize.
  • Another option for melting chocolate is to place the chocolate in a bowl, and set the bowl in a pan of hot water. Not simmering water, but just hot water. It will melt the chocolate chips without any seizing.
