Additional Recipe Adjustments

  • Liquids - Make sure there is at least 1 cup of liquid in the recipe so the Instant Pot can build up pressure and steam to cook the food. Lift food up from the water with steamers or a small rack if you don't want them in the liquid.
  • Thickeners - Add thickeners after your Instant Pot has finished cooking. Depressurize, set the program to saute or cook, adding the thickener. A good example would be a Beef Stew. Cook it in the Instant Pot, then add the flour & water to thicken the broth into a thick, rich stew.
  • Beans & Grains - Only fill the Instant Pot half full when cooking rice, beans, or other grains as they can double in size when cooking. Our IP Cilantro Lime Rice is a great example.
  • Meats - Large thick cuts of meat like roasts have a higher density, and will require a little more time than cut up meats. If using frozen meats, add an extra 10 minutes to the Instant Pot cook time.
  • Dairy - Add dairy items after the main dish cooks, the heat and pressure can make them curdle. A good example of how to add dairy after the Instant Pot cook time is our IP Chicken Tikka Masala
  • Canning - The Instant Pot is not made for pressure canning low acid foods. You can hot water bath process jams, preserves, and pickles, but use a pressure canner to make sure that both temperature and pressure properly process low acid foods.
