Ingredients for Guacamole
Guacamole is easy to make, and it's always a hit with guests. This recipe is for the traditional version of guacamole, which features avocado, onion, tomato, and lime juice.
You can kick it up on your own by adding minced jalapeños or chopped cilantro if you choose. No matter how you make it, guacamole is always a delicious appetizer or snack.

- Ripe avocados - they should just give a little when pressed up by the top. You don't want mushy, but under ripe avocados lack flavor.
- Chopped onion
- Lime Juice - fresh squeezed
- Chopped tomato - optional
- Chopped Cilantro - optional
- Salt to taste, if needed

How to Make Guacamole
We used red onion, but any onion work. If you decide to add the chopped tomato, the Roma tomatoes are best, as they are less juicy. Use fresh lime juice as this is what prevents your guacamole from turning brown.
Step 1. Peel the avocados

Peel the three avocados and put them in a mixing bowl.

Mash them up as chunky as you like.

Step 2. Mix in the veggies

Chop the onion, tomatoes and cilantro if you are using them.

Place all the veggies in the bowl, add the lime juice and blend the mixture.

Serving Suggestions
Serve as a guacamole dip along with Easy Pico de Gallo and tortilla chips, or as a topping for tacos, burritos, and other Mexican dishes. This simple guacamole recipe is so easy to play around with to make your own variations.

Variations
Here's a few variations you can make using our basic guacamole recipe:
- Spicy - mince up a jalapeno pepper fine and add for a Spicy Guacamole.
- Without Tomatoes - Omit the tomatoes.
- With Toppings - add a dollop of sour cream and grated cheese on top of your guacamole for tortilla chip dip.
Storing Guacamole
You can store this guacamole covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. This mixture will not freeze well though, as the vegetables in the avocado mixture will get soft and weepy.
Tips for Success
- Squeeze the lime juice on your avocados right after peeling them and putting them in the mixing bowl. The acid in the limes prevent discoloration.
- Make sure to choose nicely ripe avocados, hand pick them!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, tomatoes are entirely optional. All you need for guacamole is the avocados, onion, and lime juice. Tomatoes make a chunkier, more authentic Mexican style, but if you don't like tomatoes in your guac, leave them out.
