How to Make Sprinkle Cookies
Preparation notes: Set your butter out early so that it has softened to room temperature. Do not soften using a microwave or melt the butter. Be sure to chill the formed cookies so they hold their shape while baking.
Walmart and Dollar Tree have great selections of seasonal themed candy jimmies and other decorating supplies. Of course Amazon has an even wider selection.

Step 1. Measure the Dry and Wet Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, measure the flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk to blend the dry ingredients well. Measure the sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl.

Using a hand mixer, cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg and the vanilla extract and mix in until fully blended.

Step 2. Mix the Sugar Cookie Dough

Add the dry ingredients in two or three portions to the bowl of wet ingredients. Use the mixer to blend after each addition.

Scrape sides with a spatula and mix all the flour in. Add some sprinkle jimmies to the dough and mix in using a spatula.
Form and Bake the Cookies
- Pour some Halloween sprinkles into a shallow bowl. Scoop the cookie dough out and form 20 balls. Press the cookie balls to flatten them slightly, and press one side down in the bowl of Halloween sprinkles.
- Set the decorated cookie on the parchment lined cookie sheet. Press in any candy eyes.
- Repeat with all the cookie balls, ten cookies per cookie sheet. Set in the refrigerator for 40 minutes, or the freezer for 20 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350 F and line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper or a Silpat mat. Set them aside while cookies are chilling.
- Bake at 350 F for 12 to 13 minutes or until lightly browned. The center will still appear soft, but will firm up while cooling.
- Remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack.

Substitutions
You can substitute regular salted butter, but omit the salt in the recipe if you do so.
Variations
The variations on this basic sugar cookie recipe are endless! Just change the Halloween sprinkles to another holiday or seasonal theme. You can also reduce the flour by ¼ cup and use ⅓ cocoa powder to make Chocolate Sugar Sprinkle Cookies!
Equipment
I use some cookie sheets that are fabulous. Heavy, sturdy metal and rimmed. I use them for cookies, sheet pancakes, and sheet pan dinner. They come two cookie sheets to the set with two wire cooling racks that fit nicely inside the rimmed cookie/baking sheet. They are terrific value:
- Baking Sheet - Cookie Sheets with Wire Racks
- Hand Mixer
Top Tips
- Place your bowl of wet ingredients in an empty kitchen sink. Move the faucet to the other side. Use the hand mixer while the bowl is in the sink and all the splatter and flour dust will be contained right in the sink!

Frequently asked questions
These cookies hold their shape when chilled. They spread a little flatter when baked right after forming. You can bake them without chilling, but they will be flatter cookies.
