Frozen Berries

How To Make This Blueberry Strawberry Banana Smoothie
If you're using frozen berries, you won't need to wash or trim stems.
Step 1: Start by washing your berries and removing any stems. Put them in a colander so you can shake excess water off. Don't soak the berries in a bowl of water though, as they will absorb water.
Step 2: Peel the banana, slice into chunks, and add to the blender. Add the blueberries to the blender.

Step 3: Add the strawberries on top of the blueberries. The blueberries are the smallest so they will get down into the blades and crannies. During the blending, they will help pull down the strawberries into the vortex for a uniform blend.

Step 4: Add yogurt, or milk. For a thick smoothie, add a few ice cubes as well. Blend until smooth. Pour into two glasses serve immediately.

Enjoy your smoothie on it's own, or with our Almond Vanilla Granola added on the side.

Substitutions and Variations
Here are a few delicious variations or substitutions when making this recipe.
- Frozen Berries: Use frozen berries (available year round!) for a thicker, colder smoothie without needing extra ice.
- Dairy Swaps: Instead of yogurt, you can use milk (dairy or non-dairy like almond or oat milk) for a lighter consistency. For a creamier smoothie, use Greek yogurt.
- Thicker Texture: If your smoothie isn't as thick as you like, add a few ice cubes to the blender or incorporate a protein powder before blending.
Tips for Success
Here are a few tips for making this recipe:
- Consider "Stacking" Ingredients: For optimal blending, especially in less powerful blenders, place liquids at the bottom, followed by soft fruits (like fresh banana), then frozen fruits, and finally any leafy greens or seeds on top. This helps create a vortex for smoother blending.
- Blend Frozen First (or with Liquid): For the smoothest consistency and to prevent your blender from getting stuck, either use mostly frozen berries and blend them with the liquid first, or add the liquid and banana, blend, then gradually add the frozen fruit.
- Adjust Sweetness Naturally: The ripeness of your banana and berries impacts sweetness. Taste your smoothie before adding any extra sweetener. If needed, a small drizzle of honey or maple syrup can enhance the flavors.
- Don't Over-Blend: Blend just until smooth. Over-blending can warm up the smoothie and make it less frosty.
Storage Options
Some recommended storage options for this recipe are:
- Immediate Enjoyment: Smoothies taste best right after you blend them, so enjoy it fresh for the best flavor and texture.
- Freezing is Not Recommended: Smoothies made with fresh fruit, milk, or yogurt don't typically freeze well as a complete drink. The texture often gets watery or separates when thawed, and the fresh flavors tend to fade.
- Raspberry Pancakes
- Banana Sheet Pancakes
- Mango Pineapple Smoothie
- Cream Scones with Dried Cherries
- Dairy Free Blueberry Muffins
Frequently Asked Questions
Adjust the amount of liquid (milk or yogurt). Start with less and add more gradually until you reach your desired consistency.
A powerful blender helps! If yours isn't high-powered, try adding liquids first, then the fresh banana, and finally gradually add the frozen berries in smaller increments.
This smoothie is a great base for a scoop of protein powder, chia seeds, flax seeds, or even a handful of spinach for added nutrients.
